Applied
Survey Research is proud to have completed the 2005
Santa Cruz County Homeless Census and Survey, a follow-up
to the 2000 report. The goals of this project were:
- To increase
public awareness of homeless issues and generate support for constructive
solutions.
- To meet
the current HUD mandate for a biennial homeless census and preserve
current federal funding for homeless services.
- To provide
an updated measure of changes in the numbers and characteristics
of the homeless population since the 2000 Santa Cruz County Homeless
Census and Needs Assessment.
- To generate
current data to support policy makers and service providers in
planning and implementing services that meet the needs of the
homeless.
This
project consisted of a census and survey to develop a comprehensive
picture of the homeless population of Santa Cruz County:
- A peer-oriented,
point-in-time count of street and sheltered homeless:
- A count
of homeless persons in 21 census tracts, representing a strategic
sample of 52 total tracts in the County.
- The
shelter count consisted of enumerating homeless persons in
shelters on the night of the census. Shelters included emergency
shelters, transitional housing programs, hospitals, jails,
and hotels and motels that accept vouchers.
- Comprehensive
one-on-one interviews:
- Conducted
by trained homeless workers and service providers.
- 402
Santa Cruz County homeless residents were interviewed from
late March to mid-April 2005.
