ASR
conducted an intensive data-collection effort targeting farmworkers
in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys. The project used farmworkers
as interviewers of farmworkers, in order to gain access and preserve
sensitivity. Over 700 farmworkers were surveyed, and the results
indicated important issues facing this underserved population, including
housing costs, overcrowded housing, and low wages. The study also
highlighted important contradictions of stereotypes about farmworkers,
including evidence that they are typically married with two children,
of stable residence, and work in the area year-round.
The
final report is now complete. A press conference was held at Tres
Palmas on San Juan Road on June 4, 2001 and the report was presented
to the County Boards of Supervisors on June 5, 2001.
