School Readiness and Student Achievement: A Longitudinal Analysis of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties
A growing body of research at the national level has begun to examine the relationship between children’s readiness for school at kindergarten entry and their later school achievement. Locally, the Santa Clara County Partnership for School Readiness and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation jointly commissioned a longitudinal study to examine associations between Santa Clara and San Mateo County students’ school readiness levels at kindergarten entry and their longer-term school outcomes. Study results showed that readiness does indeed matter for later academic success. In particular, the Kindergarten Academics and Self-Regulation skills that students possessed at the start of kindergarten strongly predicted their performance on English-Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics California Standards Tests (CSTs) taken 3 ½ years later. Readiness levels were associated with other school outcomes as well.

Together for Kindergarten: Understanding & Improving
School Readiness . . . Together!
Together for Kindergarten (TFK) is working to help early educators, kindergarten teachers and administrators to develop opportunities to support kindergarten readiness. ASR worked with TFK to develop a logic model as a guiding theory of change, presented data about school readiness at their countywide forum, and created GIS maps displaying Licensed Child Care Centers, Licensed Family Child Care Homes, and elementary schools by district.
At the Countywide Together for Kindergarten Forum on Feb. 24, 2010, ASR's Dr. Lynne Mobilio presented with Delaine Eastin, former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, who set the stage and inspired the audience to work toward helping students transition to kindergarten. Dr. Mobilio presented compelling and pertinent data to further set the stage and showed the importance of quality preschool, effective transition activities and collaboration between educators, and the readiness of schools and families. The GIS maps are being used to help identify "hubs" of educators by district and neighborhood, with the idea of building relationships so that neighborhood teams of educators can develop strategies to work together to promote school readiness and ease the transition from preschool to kindergarten.

From Data to Action: Santa Cruz County Community Assessment Project - A Case Study in Community Improvement
In May 2010, Susan Brutschy, President of Applied Survey Research, traveled to Israel to share ASR's community assessment work and our community improvement cycle. She participated in discussions about how to construct the new Israeli national indicator project. The state of Israel is creating Israel's Progress Index. The goal is to establish the index to assess quality of life and to use the index as a central part of decision-making. Another goal is to create small local community indicator projects with citizen involvement throughout the country. The project is part of the Israeli Society for Sustainable Economics (ISSE), a non-profit organization that works to promote sustainable economic thinking in Israel. Susan was able to meet with the CEO of Israel's Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services and the Ministry was one of the sponsor's of Susan's visit. In Israel, Susan led workshops on how to create a community assessment project, how to move from data to action, and how to use Results Based Accountability to improve quality of life in communities. She also discussed the importance of linking community indicator projects at the regional level to individual program performance.
