Health and Housing

  • ASR works with communities to assess the quality of life of its farmworkers.
  • The goals of the farmworker studies range from determining an accurate count of farmworkers, determining the health status of farmworkers, determining where farmworkers would like to live (on or off the farm), providing health education and health access, providing legal advice for injured workers, and increasing the knowledge of farmworkers about their workers' compensations benefits.
  • ASR completed one of the largest farmworker surveys in the history of the United States in Washington State in 2006.
  • The Washington State Farmworker Study collected data representing 95% of the state's farmworker regions.
  • ASR has pioneered a peer-to-peer survey methodology where we train farmworkers to survey other farmworkers during the harvest season.
  • ASR has been conducting farmworker assessments since 1999 in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys.
  • Survey questions include a wide range of topics from work history, income and expenses, the health of the family, access to health care, pesticide exposure, where farmworkers would like to live (on or off the farm), and civic engagement.
  • Data from the Washington State Study was used to help to contribute to the creation of a universal health care for undocumented children as well as the creation of new farmworker housing.
