Housing Conditions Survey and Housing Needs Assessment

  • ASR works with cities and counties to assess the quality of the available housing in the area, as well as the needs of residents for housing.
  • ASR uses telephone surveys, visual surveys, and peer-to-peer surveys to assess housing quality and housing needs.
  • The goal of a housing conditions survey is to help determine the best strategies to meet the housing needs of residents, especially the needs of lower-income residents and/or residents with disabilities.

Farmworker Housing

  • ASR works with communities to assess the housing status and housing needs of farmworkers.
  • ASR completed one of the largest farmworker surveys in the history of the United States in Washington State in 2006; one major focus of the study was on the housing needs of farmworkers, the quality of their current housing, and where they would like to live (on or off the farm).
  • ASR pioneered a peer-to-peer survey methodology where we trained farmworkers to survey other farmworkers during the harvest season.
  • ASR has been conducting farmworker assessments since 1999 in the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys.
  • Survey questions include a wide range of topics from work history, income and expenses, housing status, housing type, number of people in the dwelling, where farmworkers would like to live (on or off the farm), the quality of the housing (water, pests, heat), and the health of the family.
  • Data from the Washington State Study was used to decide where to build new farmworker housing in the state.
