Community Health Assessments

  • ASR has conducted health assessments for a wide range of communities in California, Arizona and Alaska.
  • Typically the community health assessments include dozens of indicators of health and well-being.
  • Some indicators include:
    • health insurance coverage, immunization, prenatal care, infant mortality, teen births, asthma, diabetes, obesity and nutrition, dental care, drug and alcohol use, disabilities, intentional and unintentional injuries, cancer rates, and causes of death.

Community Assessment Projects

  • ASR has conducted dozens of community assessment projects in California, Arizona and Alaska.
  • In 2007, ASR won a national award from the Urban Markets Initiative of the Brookings Institution for having one of the best community indicator projects in the country in Santa Cruz County California.
  • Typically ASR's community assessments include over 130 indicators in six domain areas: the economy, education, health, public safety, the social environment and natural environment.
  • In the health portion of the assessment, there are approximately thirty indicators ranging from access to health care, prenatal care, disability status, physical fitness, chronic and communicable diseases, and leading causes of death.

Children's Reports

  • ASR works with communities to help them assess the quality of life of the children in their community.
  • Typically, a Children's Report will contain data in key areas such as physical health, social and emotional well-being, family stability, school success, community supports, and child safety.
  • Some key health indicators are prenatal care, low birth weight, immunization rates, teen births, sexually transmitted diseases, injuries, child abuse, drug, alcohol and cigarette use, nutrition and obesity.
  • ASR has completed many Children's Reports, including reports for Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Nevada counties in California and the greater Flagstaff region of Arizona.

Farmworker

  • ASR completed one of the largest farmworker surveys in the history of the United States.
  • ASR trained farmworkers in Washington State and individuals that worked with farmworkers in order to survey 2,858 other farmworkers about their quality of life.
  • The survey contained extensive questions about farmworkers' health status, the health of their families and their access to health care.
  • The research findings from the Washington State Farmworker Study helped to contribute to the creation of universal health care for undocumented children in Washington.

Homeless

  • ASR has been working on issues facing homeless individuals, including their health, mental health and their access to care since 1999.
  • ASR has pioneered a unique peer-to-peer methodology where we train homeless individuals to both count the homeless and to survey other homeless people.
  • ASR's homeless methodology was cited by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as a best practice methodology.
  • ASR has completed Homeless Census and Surveys in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Mendocino counties in California.
  • ASR has also worked in the greater Atlanta Georgia area and the Southern Nevada region including Las Vegas.
  • In our Homeless Census and Surveys, we ask extensive survey questions about the health issues that homeless people face and the quality and accessibility of services for homeless individuals and their children.
